The Challenge

  • 43.8 million people experience mental illness every year (1 in 5 Americans).
  • Over 10 million people (1 in 25 adults) experience serious illness that limits their quality of life.
  • Only 41% of adults with a mental health condition recieved mental health services in the last year.
  • African American and Hispanic Americans utilize mental health services at half the rate as Caucasian Americans.
  • Half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14, three-quarters by the age of 24.
  • 21% of youth aged 13-18 experience a severe mental illness at some point in their life.
  • 18% of American adults experience an anxiety disorder with a specific phobia.
  • Nearly 16 million American adults had at least one major depressive episode last year.
  • 2.6% of American adults live with bi-polar disorder.
  • 1% of American adults live with schizophrenia.

 

The Consequences

  • Serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings per year.
  • 46% of homeless live with a severe mental disorder AND co-occurring substance abuse issue.
  • Approximately 20% of American prisoners have a recent mental health history. 
  • 70% of youth in juvenile justice systems have at least one mental health condition, nearly 20% of them live with a serious mental illness that affects their quality of life.
  • Mood disorders, including major depression, dysthymic disorder and bipolar disorder, are the third most common cause of hospitalization in the U.S. 
  • Individuals living with serious mental illness face an increased risk of having chronic medical conditions.
  • American adults living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than others, largely due to treatable medical conditions left untreated.
  • Over one-­third (37%) of students age 14-21with a mental health condition, who are served by special education, drop ou.  This is the highest dropout rate of any disability group.
  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., the 3rd leading cause of death for people aged 10–24, and the 2nd leading cause of death for people aged 15–24.
  • More than 90% of children who die by suicide have a mental health condition.
  • Each day an estimated 20 veterans die by suicide.

How We Give

After forming The Love Tea Company our founders asked themselves, "How can we accomplish the most good as possible?"    

For decades, solving complex social problems has been on the backs of governments.   But we have seen time and time again that governments are not equipped or organized in a way to accomplish radical social change.   Laws are often changed and adapted but they never really meet the true spirit behind the ideas.  Governments alone can not solve social problems but together we can choose to make a difference in something as simple as a purchasing decision.  

The Flagg Foundation for Mental Wellness will be formally incorporated in early 2017, by the Founders of The Love Tea Company.   The Foundation will be initially funded by a $10,000 gift from Margaret B. Flagg and the initial purchases of Love Tea.  The Flagg Foundation for Mental Wellness will deliver strategic, tactical and bold leadership designed to address the enormous social challenge of Mental Health in the United States.  Driven through a laser focused alignment of talent, willingness, readiness, and culture we will endeavor to ensure the thriveability of outcomes long past your gift or donation.  

We know a pledge to donate 25% of our net profit comes with a great responsibility.   As such, The creation of The Flagg Foundation for Mental Wellness is our promise to you that we will use your purpose driven choice will be used toward "doing the most good".
